I’ve chosen my best layers to cross with my 2 pure lavender Araucana roosters. The hens laid reasonably well right through the winter, even though the coop wasn't heated, and they are now in full production. They don't go broody, and the roosters are gentle, so these traits should pass on to the chicks.
As the Araucana males carry two blue egg genes, when crossed with Leghorn cross (white eggs), Easter eggers (green eggs of various shades) or Bovan (brown egg layers) they will produce an attractive mix of blue, cyan, olive green shells. A reference chart is included to show the expected colour range.
This year I’ve already hatched three batches (Feb 13, March 31, May 22) and fertility was very good. Both hens and roosters are in their prime.
My birds free-range every day, weather permitting, and are fed sprouted grains, fermented vegetables, edible weeds, and quality layer pellets.
